| NW-SCC Launches Free 4-week Ready to Work Training Program |
| December 28, 2007 – Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) will offer
a free four-week Ready to Work Training Program to assist adults in
obtaining entry-level skills required for employment with most businesses
and industries in Alabama.
The Ready to Work Program will offer two new student orientations available
on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 10:00am – 12:00 pm and 6:00pm – 8:00pm. The
orientation sessions will be held at the Workforce Development Center on the
NW-SCC Shoals Campus. For more information and to register for orientation, please contact Donna Peck, Ready to Work Program Director, at 256.331.5299
or dpeck@nwscc.edu.
The program is free of charge and offers both day and night classes to be
completed in four weeks. The program includes Work Keys Certification and
AIDT training in Workplace Ethics, Computer Training, Manufacturing, Job
Search and Problem Solving. At the successful completion of the program,
workers will be awarded an Alabama Career Readiness Certificate and an
Alabama Certified Worker Certificate verifying that they are trained in job
readiness skills.
According to Donna Peck, Ready to Work Program Director, the college will be
working very closely with AIDT and area businesses to increase the number of
qualified applicants for employment. “AIDT is assisting the National
Alabama Corporation (NAC) with the employment screening and training. Those
people who do not meet the baseline criteria to be accepted into AIDT’s
training program for NAC workers can participate in the NW-SCC Ready to Work
Program to become qualified in those areas in which they may be lacking,” stated Peck. “After they successfully complete the program and receive
state certifications, it may help them in being considered for employment by
NAC or other businesses and industries that require the certifications,” she
added. |

Northwest-Shoals to Hold Open Spring Registration January 3rd
|
| December 29, 2007 — For students planning to attend
Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) for the 2008 spring semester and
have not registered, there's still time to do so. NW-SCC will be holding its
annual open spring registration January 3, 2008, according to Admissions
Director, Tom Carter.
The spring open registration will be held on both the Shoals & Phil Campbell
campus, Thursday, January 3, 2008. Registration on the Shoals Campus will be
held in the Patriot Center (gymnasium) while registration on the Phil
Campbell Campus will be held in the student center of Building 305. Open
registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. break for lunch at 12:30 p.m. and
resume for the afternoon session at 4:30 p.m. and conclude at 7:00 p.m.
Spring classes begin Monday, January 7th. For more information or to obtain
a copy of the spring semester schedule, call (256) 331-5333 or visit the

However, please note the college will be closed through January 1, 2008, for

INTERIOR DECORATING - Pulling Your Rooms Together
Do you get confused when making decisions on paint and fabric colors, window treatments, accessories, or furniture arrangements for your home? Join us in this fun, informative, non-technical hands-on class. You will learn to coordinate fabric colors, window treatments, accessorize and to arrange your furniture. Several field trips to area homes are planned.
Jan. 18 – Feb. 12 (6 sessions); Tuesdays 6:30– 8:30 p.m.; Cost - $50.00
PHOTOGRAPHY I
In this Basic Photography class, you will learn skills to help you take better pictures. Whether you have a digital or 35mm camera, the basics are the same. You will learn to hold the camera properly, focus, the meaning of depth or field, an ISO and when to use it, shutter exposure – 1,000; 1/250; 1/60 and B. You will learn the meaning of aperture; F.4; F.5.6, 8 etc; different lens 35mm, 50mm, 105 mm and how to use it, care of your camera, weather effects on your camera, how to take sports pictures, fast action pictures, fire works, etc., the use and understanding of flash.

BEGINNING SOCIAL/BALLROOM DANCING
Social dancing is great fun! In this class you will learn basic steps for both smooth and Latin dances. Our instructor, Brenda Morissette, has danced and trained with national level teachers, coaches and competitors from across the country. Ballroom dance is a stress reducing, low impact physical and mental activity. Ballroom dance also brings the opportunity for new friendships with people who are learning to dance just as you are.

WATERCOLOR: A BEGINNING CLASS
This initial foray into the medium of watercolor painting will offer a basic understanding of the materials, techniques and procedures in the creation of watercolor painting. Students will learn to prepare a sheet of watercolor paper to receive a painting, methods and techniques in the application of watercolor paint and the proper framing of a finished work of art. Composition, color theory and archival materials will be discussed in this class.
Jan. 22 – Feb 12 (4 sessions); Tuesday s 6:30- 8:30 p.m.; Cost - $40.00
MEDICAL CODING
Northwest-Shoals Community College in conjunction with Mr. Curtis Cherry, CPC will offer a Medical Coding Course during the spring semester. Mr. Cherry received his Certified Professional Coding Certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders-AAPC. This 80-hour coding certification-training course will prepare the individual to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. For those who would like to take the exam to become fully certified but do not meet the required two-years experience, this course will allow one year to be waived. Once the requirement is met, the coder will move from being an apprentice (CPC-A) to a fully qualified Certified Professional Coder (CPC). The course will also help the experienced Coder become better at what they do as well as introduce the novice to an innovative rewarding career.

- Coding of anesthesia
- Coding of surgery
- Coding of radiology
- Coding of pathology/laboratory
- Coding of medicine
- Coding of conventions
- Evaluation and management services using ICD09-CM, CPT and HCPCS
- Medical terminology as it applies to medical coding

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
This class is an introduction to medical terms and phrases. You will learn to understand the formation of medical words, prefix and suffix combinations with root word, to analyze the structure of a word and define its meaning. The correct spelling and pronunciation of medical terminology is included in this course.
Jan. 7 – Feb. 28 (7 sessions); Mondays 7:00- 9:00 p.m.; Cost - $120.00
ACT REVIEW
This 9-hour course is designed to prepare students with intensive work on English, mathematics, science and reading along with test taking tips. You will learn to approach this test in terms of accuracy, timing, what to study and how to reduce test anxiety.

Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, Ala. -- Northwest-Shoals Community College
(NW-SCC) recently nominated four individuals to represent the college at the
Chancellor’s Awards Ceremony held during the annual Alabama College
Association (ACA) Conference at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel and Civic
Center.

NW-SCC President Dr. Humphrey Lee was also installed as President of ACA.
The association is dedicated to the professional advancement of employees of
the Alabama College System. Lee will serve a one-year term with the
association. “As president of ACA, I look forward to providing quality
professional development for the employees of the two-year system,” Lee
stated.
Below are the four nominees from Northwest-Shoals Community College and the
awards in which they were vying for:

Phil Campbell Campuses. Alton Rice is a resident of Town Creek, AL, and
serves as a Design Engineering Technology Instructor on the Shoals Campus of
NW-SCC. Sheila Morris is a resident of Tuscumbia, AL, and serves as the
secretary for the Office of Planning and Research at NW-SCC.
During the Chancellor’s Award ceremony, nominees from community colleges
across the state were selected from to determine the winner in the
above-mentioned categories. |

NW-SCC PRESENTS "SCIENCE WITH SANTA: FUN WITH CHEMISTRY"
Phil Campbell, Ala. - Northwest-Shoals Community College's (NW-SCC)
presents "Science with Santa: Fun with Chemistry".
Have any of these questions ever entered your mind?
. How can a pickle be used to make an electric current?
. Is it possible to turn copper into gold? . Do things spontaneously combust?
. How much energy is in a single potato chip?
. Can you turn soda pop bottles into cannons?
NW-SCC is giving you the opportunity to learn the answers to all these
questions. About 30 simple chemistry experiments demonstrating the fun and
magic of science will be used to find the answers during "Science with
Santa". This program will take place Saturday, December 8, 2007 from 9:00
a.m. until noon at NW-SCC's Phil Campbell Campus.
Dr. Mike Murphy, Chemistry Instructor and director of the free program, is
enthusiastically planning another wonderful day for area elementary school
children and their parents. "We plan to have an even better program this
year, and in addition original favorite experiments, we have incorporated
some fun and interesting activities that will help children learn about
alternative energy sources and ways to protect the environment," stated
Murphy.
The event is sponsored by NW-SCC, the Alpha Zeta Iota chapter of Phi Theta
Kappa International Honor Society, and the American Chemical Society.

NW-SCC ADULT EDUCATION IS PARTNERING FOR SUCCESS
November 28, 2007 - Muscle Shoals & Phil Campbell, Ala. – Northwest-Shoals Community College’s
(NW-SCC) Adult Education Program is forming local partnerships to better aid
students.
The NW-SCC Adult Education Program is partnering with the Alabama Army
National Guard, Vocational Rehabilitation, CareerLinks (Sheffield, Decatur, & Hamilton), Departments of Human Resources (Colbert & Lauderdale Counties),
the JOBS Program and several programs within the college. “In an effort to
reach those individuals who need the services of the Adult Education
Program, we continually strive to establish highly effective partnerships
with local agencies in order to facilitate education and training to enhance
the overall quality of life for the area’s residents,” stated NW-SCC Adult
Education Director, Donnie Sweeney.
The Adult Education Program assists not only high school education, but also
encourages work readiness and postsecondary education. “By partnering
internally at the college we can aid our students in reaching both their
education and employment goals,” stated Sweeney. Some internal college
partners include the WorkKeys Testing, Student Support Services, the Youth
Success Program and the Career Services Center.
Targeting undereducated adults, the Adult Education Program serves
individuals who are 16 years of age or older. Enrollment is open-ended and
clients progress at their own rate as they advance toward achieving their
literacy goal(s). Curriculum components consist of GED Preparation, On-line
GED classes, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Workforce Credential
Assessment providing students with a WorkKeys/Career Readiness Certificate. “Our Adult Education Program has a staff of skilled and committed
instructors who truly care about our students and provide their students
with the individual attention they require. Classes are free and open
entry; meaning there is no charge and new students are accepted on a weekly
basis not just at the beginning of a school semester,” stated Sweeney.
Last fiscal year the Adult Education program served over 900 clients. As of
October 31, 2007, there were 425 students enrolled in Adult Education / GED
Preparation classes with 11-day classes, nine night classes and one on-line
class currently in session. There are three ESL classes offered consisting
of one day class and two night classes. These classes are located in the
service areas of Colbert, Lauderdale, Franklin, and Lawrence Counties and in
